DIY Gallery Wall Tips and Gallery Wall Inspiration
Most homes have that one awkward space. The wall that’s so big you have no idea what to do with it. Or the room that’s so small adding bulky furniture would ruin the space. So what’s the best way to design or decorate those tough spaces? One of my favorite go to design elements is a gallery wall! So I wanted to share with all of you why they’re a great option. As well as some Modern Farmhouse Gallery Wall inspiration from my own home!
Gallery Walls are Great
“Ginormous Cosmic Power, Itty Bitty Living Space” – Genie
When it comes to getting a lot of coverage without wasting a lot of space, gallery walls are the perfect solution! They create large focal points in a room or space without eliminating usable floor space. If you’re the kind of person who loves art elements and hates tripping over furniture, gallery walls will be your best home decor friend!
They’re for Everyone
Another reason why gallery walls are so great, is because they can be personalized for any style or preference. You can go with a stream lined, clean look and keep it very symmetrical. Or you can do more of an eclectic look with mixed media and different textures, shapes, and elements.
You May Already Have What You Need
If that’s not enough to convince you of the greatness of gallery walls, they’re also great for the budget conscious decorator. Chances are, you already have picture frames, art pieces, or other gallery wall capable decor already laying around your house. Maybe you just need to rearrange them or pull them out of storage!
Baskets are a great option for cheap gallery wall materials! Check out this similar post for how I use baskets in my home decor: Basket Decor Ideas
My Budget Friendly Version
A couple of great ways to save on expenses when it comes to gallery walls are to use what you already have. (Like I mentioned earlier). Or you can swing through your local second hand shops!
Here’s What I Used for My Modern Farmhouse Gallery Wall
Float Frames
My modern farmhouse gallery wall was the result of a Goodwill trip. (Plus a little DIY). And I love how it turned out! I happened across three float frames on one of my trips and knew they had to come home with me. I was able to pick them up for $1.50 each because there were a few small gouges in the wood. But this girl is all about the distressed look, so it wasn’t a problem!
Clipboard Frames
I knew three wouldn’t be enough for the look I wanted, so I paired them with three of my Farmhouse Clipboard Frames. And the wood color of the clipboard frames matched the “distressed” marks on the frames. IT WAS MEANT TO BE!!

Ferns
Greenery is a key element in most of my home decor, so I wanted to incorporate it into my modern farmhouse gallery wall too. After a quick trip to Hobby Lobby, I found the perfect ferns for this gallery wall. They were a deep forest green with hints of black near the veins. They complimented the black frames beautifully!
White Art Paper
With my taupe walls as a background, I wanted to create a bigger contrast for the ferns to pop off of. After rummaging through my craft stash, I found this amazing art paper. (Also, from a thrift store trip that I knew would come in handy eventually!). All I had to do was crop the paper to the size I wanted and layer it under the fern branches.
The Finished Look
Once I finished putting the greenery into the float frames, I arranged them in a grid pattern and hung them. I am so in love with how my Modern Farmhouse Gallery Wall turned out!
My heart is happiest when I am able to incorporate wood, black, white, and green into my home decor. This beautiful Modern Farmhouse Gallery Wall hits every mark!
I followed the white paper through onto the clipboards and added a little freehand script art for a personal touch!

DIY Gallery Wall Tips I Learned Along the Way
DIY Gallery Wall Tips: #1 Do a practice layout on the floor
Before you start punching a bunch of holes in the wall, make sure you know exactly where everything is going. Measure out all the spaces and check the balance of your arrangement. This will be easier for symmetrical layouts, that don’t have as many differing shapes and unique pieces.
DIY Gallery Wall Tips: #2 Embrace the Extreme
Whether you’re going for symmetry or mixed media, your best bet will be to exaggerate your style. If you’re going with an eclectic, miss-matched arrangement, avoid any kind of symmetry or pattern. If you pick a symmetrical arrangement, keep the measurements and angles equal.
Ok, now that I’ve said that, I’m gonna contradict myself a little bit. Our brains are amazing things. (Seriously, as a mama I’m in awe watching those little brains develop and work!) And, when it comes to home decor and design, our brains will occasionally take certain leaps.
If you noticed in my Modern Farmhouse Gallery Wall, my clipboard frames weren’t the same size as the float frames. In order to give it a symmetrical look, I alternated them in the grid pattern like a checkerboard. You’re brains will do the rest! If you space them right, your brain will create it’s own symmetrical “grid lines.”
DIY Gallery Wall Tips: #3 Photographic Evidence
Once you’ve gotten your layout down exactly how you want it on the floor, snap a picture of it! That way you’ll have something reference when it’s only half up, and you get interrupted or distracted (#momlife).
DIY Gallery Wall Tips: #4 Start in the Middle
Once you’re ready to start hanging your gallery wall, it works best to start with the middle frame or piece. If you start from one side and work to the other, you may have a harder time keeping everything centered and even. You don’t want to finish and realize you’re a foot closer to one wall than the other. (My OCD would force me to start all over, with a whole new set of screw holes!).
