Home decor is one of my absolutely favorite things to do! But, if you’re not sure where or how to start, it can be very overwhelming. So, I’ve put together this Home Decor for Beginners series. I’ll go over some basic Interior Design Tips that will help you with How To Design A Home!
How To Design A Home #1
Welcome to the first part of the Home Decor for Beginners series! The first thing you’ll want to start with, when it comes to Interior Design Tips, is your vision. Or what you’re trying to achieve.
I’m sure I’m not the only one with a “Dream Home” board on Pinterest! There’s so much inspiration out there for how we want our homes to look. Now it’s time to sort through all of those images or ideas. And get a good idea of the look or style that you want in your home.
Once you’ve done that, it’s time to use my first Home Decor for Beginners Interior Design Tip…
Make It Livable
If there’s one thing I’ve learned about home decor, it’s that it’s all about making it work for you.
You can have the most beautiful, picture perfect home. that everyone envies and all the people talk about. But, if you’re so afraid of messing it up (living in it) that you can’t use it, what’s the point?!
With little boys running around, I quickly learned some decor just doesn’t have a place in our home. Trying to keep kids alive is tough enough. Without having glass shattered all over the floor or heavy pictures falling on their heads. Not to mention how much a book shelf resembles a ladder, or how well a couch works for a trampoline!
The fact is, my little ones will bounce off of furniture, run around with sticky hands, and pretty much climb the walls like Spider Man no matter how many times I tell them not to! So, rather than invest in blood pressure medication and anxiety techniques. I decided to embrace the crazy and make our home work for them too.

Livable Home Decor
Not everyone’s definition of livable decor will look the same. You will have to determine what lifestyle your home is part of.
If you’re a frequent entertainer, you’ll want home decor that facilitates hosting. That might look like an open concept with minimal accessories and a lot of seating options.
Those who prefer the night life over mornings, might have a wet bar instead of a breakfast nook.
In my house, we try to avoid glass or heavy objects. And use furniture with a low center of gravity or that can be anchored to the wall. I’m also a big advocate for picking up home decor from second hand shops. It saves on expenses and doesn’t hurt my heart so much when it inevitably needs to be replaced.

Everyone’s livable home decor may look different, but it’s all about what works for them! So, for How to Design a Home Tip #1: Make it Livable, first ask yourself what lifestyle you have? Not necessarily the one you want. And what kind of home decor compliments it?
Make It You
During this step of the Home Decor for Beginners series, it’s also important to make sure that your home decor not only compliments your lifestyle but also reflects your personality.
There’s a reason there are so many different interior design styles. Not everyone’s taste is the same. Don’t be afraid to go where your heart takes you, even if it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. Your home decor is about making your home comfortable and inviting for you, not Judy Judgement down the street.
