This next interior design board has more of a modern farmhouse feel to it. There are rustic elements but it incorporates modern touches as well. It’s also a great neutral color palette that would be a great canvas for your own personal touches.
The Colors
I kept the colors for this inspiration board pretty simple. I chose a light taupe color and paired it with a dark forest green for balance. If you’re not sure about the green, you can pull other colors from the board or keep it neutral and incorporate the accent colors you prefer.
Some of the other colors you could pull out of this interior design board are white, brown, grey, or different shades of green. The colors I chose are a starting point for inspiration, but don’t be afraid to make adjustments that feel more like you.
The Textiles
In true t.g.h. style, I went with textiles with plenty of texture and character. But they are a little on the moody or dark side, so I kept it minimal here too. Adding a white textile is never a bad decision, if you feel like you need more options.
Keeping it simple and coordinating with the rest of the inspiration board is always one of my goals when it comes to textiles. The brown fleck fabric in the back is one of my favorites! It has an earthy feel with a more masculine style to balance other more feminine elements.
I also went with a taupe or dark tan leather and an off white heavy woven textile. It’s important to have a grade of colors incorporated in textiles so you can make design choices that work well with the space you’re designing.
Finishing Touches
The original inspiration for this interior design board was the amazing marble pattern hexagon tile mosaic! I was immediately drawn to its rustic nature with a modern shape. And rather than compete with it, I complemented it with the light taupe rectangle tile.
As always, I couldn’t resist a wood element, and found one in the deep brown of the marble veining. I also loved the heavy grain pattern of the wood that gives it a more rustic feel.
To balance the more rustic features, I opted to go a little more modern with the door pulls. They are a classic farmhouse style but with a more modern color or finish.
Possible Designs
Now that we’ve talked about all the elements, let’s get started on a design! While I love being inspired by an interior design board, it’s even better to see how that vision can come to life in a room.
Interior Design Board: Bathroom
Because I was so inspired by the tile of this interior design board, let’s start with a room that requires a lot of tile. The bathroom!
For this bathroom, let’s design around a walk in shower with no elevation or break between it and the main floor space. That way we can lay the mosaic tile throughout and give it a large cohesive look.
Follow that up with the taupe rectangle tile for the shower walls. Either horizontal or vertical would look nice, and still offer dimension to the space without competing with the beautiful hex’s!
I love using wood vanities in a bathroom. They give an organic feel and add life to a space filled with cold hard stone. Paired with a white counter to contrast the dark wood color and finished with the gold door accessories.
Because of how light our tile will make the space, using the dark green paint sample for the walls would create a great contrast. Or if you’d rather stick to the neutral palette, the taupe would compliment the hex mosaic well. And you could incorporate color in accessories.
For final touches, choose between the textiles for bath towels, rugs, or curtains.
Interior Design Board: Kitchen
Another great place for tile are kitchens, so let’s go there with our next room design.
For this room let’s use our wood laminate on the floor this time. It’s a darker color that will help ground the space as we move up with lighter elements.
Working from bottom to top, cabinets are next on the list. I would go with the light taupe paint color for our lower cabinets. Paired with a light white counter. (notice I didn’t mention upper cabinets WINK WINK)
I have to admit, I’m loving the neutral palette of this room! Rather than mess with a good thing, I would probably pass on the green paint color for this design and stick to an off white color for the walls.
Okay, now we get to use our hex mosaic! I think it would make an AMAZING bask splash across the length of the counter. To add a little character to the space, I would break the back splash tile with a single open shelf. If you need more storage space, multiple shelves wouldn’t be the wrong choice. But I love the statement a solo shelf makes right above the hexagon tile.
Next, let’s talk about textiles. If you have an open concept or an island/bar counter, look for upholstered seating with the leather sample in our interior design board. You could also incorporate a large area rug similar to the white heavy weave sample.
The gold/brass accessories will make a statement on the taupe cabinets. Since the green was an accent color for our board, it doesn’t get a ton of action in this room. But try to get a little color in your design with artwork or personal touches you want to include.
Interior Design Board: Dining Room
Alright, we have been pretty focused on the tile of the interior design board. For our last room design, let’s get creative and try creating a space inspired by our board but without the tile elements.
Dining rooms are usually located near the kitchen and are often coordinated with them. So lets follow the wood flooring from the kitchen into this room as well.
Since we decided against using the green color in our kitchen design, let’s incorporate it here. For this room, I’d love to create a really interesting design feature. Painting the walls dark green and installing open shelving across one wall to display serve ware or personal pieces. You could also set some gold frames on the shelves to add more interest.
To balance the dark walls, I would find a beautiful taupe table to be the focal point of the room. And we can also incorporate our brass element with a modern brass chandelier over the table.
For textiles, I would skip the darker fabrics in our interior design board. Instead, use modern dining chairs in the tan leather upholstery. There are a ton of dining room chair options out there, so this could be a personal preference choice I will leave up to you. You could also lighten up and balance the space with a rug inspired by our light weave upholstery textile.
If you’re a fan of hosting, you could invest in some really nice textile napkins. The dark brown fleck fabric would be a perfect contrast with the table for place settings.
Whew! There ya have it. This interior design board was so fun to be inspired by. Hopefully you were too! If you have any questions or want even more details on how I would design these rooms, let me know!
