Welcome back for another interior design board! Many of my inspiration boards have a more industrial or rustic feel to them. If you like those influences but want something a little more feminine, this is the board for you!
When it comes to my own design aesthetic, feminine isn’t a word I often use. So I set a growth goal, to create a design with a more feminine feel. I am VERY happy with how this interior design board came together. It still represents my design style, while also feeling feminine.
The Colors
I pulled out my trusty Sherwin Williams paint samples, and decided to keep it super minimal with only one color: a light grey. As I experimented with other colors, I realized they were only competing or overwhelming the other design choices.
The Textiles
The textiles were also somewhat minimal for this board. Because I wanted it to be feminine but still my style, I went with a black and white stitch fabric and a tan and white modern print. They balance each other really well and coordinate without being too complimentary.
Finishing Touches
When it comes to my design process, I usually start with the more foundational elements first. Such as the flooring or tile options. So while I refer to them most often as “finishing touches” they are usually where my inspiration starts.
This interior design board (because my goal was to create something with a feminine feel) started with the arabesque mosaic tile. And to keep it in my world, I balanced it with a really rustic wood floor.
Next I layered on the textiles, then added the paint colors. You guys know how much I love greenery! I didn’t want to stray from that too much, so I chose this really natural artificial stem that adds the perfect amount of softness and color to the board.
I also chose a concrete counter sample to coordinate with the grey textile and paint sample. And also because I couldn’t resist a little industrial in the design. The light color keeps it warm and neutral and still maintains the balance between feminine and masculine.
The last thing I added to this interior design board was a black handle to give it a modern touch. It completes the look and accents the other colors well.
Possible Designs
So we have feminine, rustic, modern, farmhouse, and industrial elements! Sounds perfect to me, but how do they work in a room design? I’ll tell you how it would go together in my head.
Interior Design Board: Bedroom
Bedroom floors definitely fall under a personal preference. You’re either a carpet person or you’re not. I prefer to meet in the middle and do wood flooring with a beautiful rug! For this room, I would do the rustic wood flooring and find a rug with a pattern similar to our patterned textile, probably in a large scale.
Okay friends, I’m gonna use a word I haven’t used yet: Wallpaper! Wallpaper is definitely making a comeback in interior decor, but in a very modern way. And it let’s you make unique and fun design choices. For this room, I would look for an arabesque wallpaper pattern to incorporate our tile element. Depending on the design, or personal preference, you could do the whole room. But I would lean toward a feature wall, most likely the wall the bed will be against.
If you decide to do the feature wall, I would go with the light grey paint for the remaining walls. It will add color without overwhelming the space.
When you’re putting together a bedroom, textiles are essential. Since we won’t be able to use the concrete counter here, let’s take inspiration from it and go with a grey textile for the comforter set.
Finish off the room with curtains in our black and white stitch textile and a black rod. Also add in either white or wood nightstands with our floral stem in a glass vase.
Interior Design Board: Kitchen
I almost always put together a kitchen with my interior design boards. I love how many materials they include and all the variations that can be made.
For this design, I would love to start with a tile pattern on the floor. Specifically, with a similar pattern and colors of our patterned textile.
Moving up, I would use the wood sample for the lower cabinets, with white upper cabinets. Paired with concrete counters, it would be a beautiful contrast and balance for our interior design board.
With the upper cabinets being white, they would flow perfectly into a back splash feature with our arabesque mosaic tile. I would keep it very clean and soft by using a white grout for a bold subtlety.
If there are windows in the room you’re working in, use the stitch pattern textile for window treatments with a bold black rod. And finish with the black handles on the cabinets.
Interior Design Board: Bathroom
Because the arabesque tile was a major inspiration for this interior design board, let’s also take advantage of it in a bathroom design. I would use it on the walls here for either a walk in shower or a tub surround.
For this room, let’s use our concrete element for flooring with grey tiles in a herringbone pattern. Which leaves the wood sample for our cabinet vanity.
I would use the light grey paint sample on the walls again. Having a slight shade difference on the walls will highlight the white tile even more.
To finish the vanity, I would add a simple white counter with the black handle accessories. Then add window treatments with one of the textiles and black rods. Place a few jars on the counter with our floral stem, add some clean white bath towels, and you’re done!
There ya have it! Hopefully I didn’t use the word feminine too much, but I’m in love with the result.
