Hi friends, I’m back with another interior design board! And I’m pretty excited to share this one with you because it’s a design board I made for my own house. Which means you will (eventually) get to see a finished room design based off of one of my interior design boards!
This board is what I put together for our master bedroom in the new house. I wanted something very modern and minimal, that also has some of my favorite rustic and industrial design features.
Another reason why I’m excited to share this interior design board with you is because I’ve mentioned in my other design boards that you can get creative and make adjustments to the design while still following the theme of the inspiration board. That can be a little ambiguous and vague. So I want to give you a real life scenario to show what I’m talking about.
Which means, hold tight because you’re in store for some DIY projects and personal touches incorporated in this design! For right now, I’ll just be talking to you guys about the concept behind the whole design. Once the projects are completed, I’ll also be adding those DIY projects to the website for you to try yourselves!
One project has to rest for a few weeks before the next steps can be completed, so it may take a hot minute, but I promise the finished product is headed your way. So be sure to keep stopping in!
And now, after all my rambling, let’s get to the actual design!
The Colors:
As you guys probably already know by now, my signature colors are black, white, wood (totally a color!), and green. They are my go to comfort colors. And since this board is for my own home, I stuck with my fav’s for this interior design board.
So, as you can see, the paint I chose for this design is a dark black. But I also added a light grey, which probably should be one of my signature colors. But if I add every color I’m in love with, the signature list would get too long haha!
The Textiles:
Textiles are essential when you’re designing a bedroom, for obvious reasons. But I still wanted to maintain a minimal feel to the space and limited the textiles to only four options.
I went with a white cotton in the back, the two in the clips are a white canvas, and a white with black flecks. The last textile I chose was the black across the bottom. I’ll explain how each will be used in my design below!
Finishing Touches:
To finish off this interior design board, I wanted to incorporate elements from my favorite design styles. I’m a sucker for an industrial look, so I included black metal elements. The paper clips holding the textile samples will also be present in the room.
I also included a medium color wood floor sample. This works for industrial, rustic, country, modern, and a ton of other styles. While we won’t be installing a laminate floor in the bedroom (I can’t convince the hubby to give up the carpet), the wood will be incorporated in a different way. Keep reading to hear how!
Greenery also covers a multitude of design styles. Obviously certain plants (i.e. banana leaves, palms, etc) tend toward more specific design styles. But if its green and can be grown indoors, I’m a fan! So I had to have it included in this interior design board.
Possible Designs:
Alright! Now you’ve seen the inspiration board, so how will I be applying it? As promised, there are some super fun DIY’s and personal touches that I’m excited to share with you. So let’s get started.
Interior Design Board: Bedroom
Okay, here is the vision behind this interior design board. Like I mentioned, we will not be installing new floor in the room, but I always start with flooring, and didn’t want to leave it out. There is currently an off white carpet laid in the room, which will coordinate well with the color scheme of the other elements.
The goal is to make a space that is open, inviting, refreshing, and comforting. So for me, that means white walls! The color gives off a sense of clean and calm for me, so I knew it was the best choice for the room. I think it also lends itself to an ethereal or romantic sense as well.
So far, we have white floors and white walls…..great start! So why not add a little more white?! Don’t quite on me yet, I promise it’ll come together.
I also plan to hang white curtains over the two windows in the room. Because of the layout of the room, the bed will be located in front of one window. So I opted to have curtains that blend into the walls rather than stand out from them. Because we live in what most would consider “the country”, we weren’t as concerned with curtains that would block light or nosy neighbors. In keeping with the ethereal feel, I went with shear white panels and contrasted them with black rods.
Time to add even more textiles! And here is where the character starts to develop. I’ll be incorporating the black textile as the bed comforter, layered over white sheets. Then I’ll create more dimension with additional throws and pillows using the other textiles shown in the inspiration board.
When you’re designing a bedroom, there isn’t a ton of surface area. Which is why I didn’t include any tile or counter samples in this interior design board. But the room does require a lot of storage which can be hard to come by in certain spaces. Because this room isn’t overflowing with extra space, I decided to optimize the closet by changing up the layout and eliminating the need for additional dressers. However, you can only optimize so much, and one dresser will be needed. Which I will get in a black or grey finish to coordinate.
I could NEVER forget to incorporate a wood element! I’m so excited to try out this DIY and share it with all of you. Recently, a couple of large trees had to be removed from the property. And immediately, I started scheming up ways to make use of them.
As luck would have it, the trees are incredibly straight, as far as trees are concerned. Currently, the plan is to cut them up into sections and use them as side tables in the room. That’s right, logs…on the floor….nothing added! (Okay there will be some sealer added to 1. protect the floor 2. keep moisture from damaging the wood and 3. give it a finished look. STAY TUNED FOR THE DIY POST)
I’m not sure how well the DIY will turn out. But if I manage to pull it off, it will be the perfect rustic, industrial, modern feature for this design.
To finish off the room, I will be adding a large black frame mirror to one wall that will be arranged with black and white art on one side of the mirror hanging from the black clips in the interior design board.
The other side of the mirror will incorporate the greenery. I plan to use the black ring in the inspiration board (yes, that’s a plant hanger!) with a hanging plant, probably more than one.
And there ya have it. A minimal, rustic, industrial modern bedroom! I’m so excited to see how this design comes together and share it with all of you. I’ll keep you posted on the progress and update this post with the other associated posts once they’re complete!
Interior Design Board: Bathroom
I’m totally in love with this interior design board as a bedroom, but it would also be beautiful applied to other spaces as well. Since we talked above about how to use it as a master bedroom, why don’t we continue the design into the master bath!
I intentionally left out tile options for this inspiration board, because I also wanted to show how you can manipulate and adjust any board to meet the needs of the space you are designing. So we will get a little creative with how to apply the elements in a way suitable for a bathroom.
Back to the Design
Again, let’s start with the floor. Since I didn’t use the floor sample from the interior design board in the bedroom, let’s use it here! A dark wood floor is a great way to ground a space that has a largely light color scheme.
For the walls, I would follow into the bathroom with white. I’d also maintain the white cotton curtains with black rods to create cohesion between the two spaces.
I think it’s safe to say that most of us dream of a walk in shower for our master baths. So why not go with that for our dream design board? Keeping with the minimal and industrial styles of the room, my first choice for shower tile would be a black hexagon, which would incorporate the black color from the design board. I’m all about subtlety with a statement. So I would use the black tile throughout the shower (floor and surround) with a black grout. The black on black helps give the tile an even more modern feel without being “in your face.”
Next, I would add to the design’s layers by incorporating the grey paint sample in a vanity. The grey would stand off the white walls beautifully.
For finishing touches, add in some more art work with the clips on the wall, find some modern black door pulls to coordinate, and maybe create a really interesting hanging plant feature with artificial stems and glass vases!
Interior Design Board: Living Room
But don’t stop there! If you’re loving the feel of this interior design board, and would want to use it in a more visible space, here’s how it can be used for a living room design.
I think the impact of this design comes from the extreme contrast of dark and light. For that reason, I wouldn’t stray from the dark wood floor with white walls too much.
But, just to show the flexibility of the inspiration board, let’s make a few changes to this space from the previous possible room designs. Living rooms are often one of the largest rooms in the house, which means you don’t have to be as concerned with overwhelming the space with dark colors as much as in smaller rooms. So for this room, why don’t we go with black curtains! See, it’s all about the power of contrast.
One element you can’t leave out of a living room is seating. So let’s incorporate the grey color with a couch. You could also add additional seating with the other textiles in the board. Or if your space isn’t large enough, those textiles could be used for pillows and throws.
The industrial elements in the interior design board could be featured in decor pieces such as lamps, knick-knacks, or artwork. And you could even throw in the greenery and more wood elements in that way as well. Maybe even a large log coffee table!
Last thing for you to do, is make it your own! Find ways to add personal touches or moments of yourself to the space. After all, this is a place meant for you.
There ya have it!
Hopefully, I was able to help you see the space the way I see it in my head! If it’s still a little fuzzy, stay tuned for a finished room post. And thanks for reading along!
