Interior decor has a lot to do with personal preference. You may have noticed from my other interior design boards that my preferences lean toward darker more earthy tones. But for this next board, I wanted to work with elements I don’t naturally gravitate toward. But still create a design that feels like me. Because sometimes we don’t know that we love something until we give it a chance!
The Colors
I always start these posts with the colors, but actually they’re usually the last elements I add to my interior design boards. That might seem a little backward, but I do it that way so I can choose what statements I want in fabric or tile, and then use the colors to balance or fill in whatever I think is missing from the design.
Because the other elements of this board were warmer tones, I wanted to balance it with some darker or cooler shades. So I went with a blueish grey color scale. Starting from the top down, I picked a slate grey, then a medium grey, next a light grey, and finally a slightly grey white.
Choosing paint colors that are closer to my preferences gives it my personal touch, while also complimenting the other design choices.
The Textiles
I saw this rust colored diamond pattern textile at the fabric store and instantly fell in love with it. It’s not necessarily something I would have sought out, but it definitely spoke to me. And that’s what interior design is all about!
Because I was getting a southwest bohemian feel from the diamond textile, I wanted to compliment that with a leather upholstery. I know technically leather isn’t a textile, but since it is often used in the same ways as a textile when it comes to interior design, I’m gonna allow it.
Finishing Touches
I love the southwest rustic feel of this board, but I wanted to make sure it didn’t go too far that direction and still maintained modern features. So I included a very natural or light colored wood sample. It pulls out the colors of the textiles beautifully, and gives the board a warm organic feel.
The southwest and bohemian styles blend well together because of their use of patterns and organic elements. So for this board, I chose a more bohemian style door pull. The gold and ivory bring in a touch of character and add to the layered effect.
For the tile option, I went really organic because I can’t resist adding a touch of my favorite rustic style. This is a natural stone tile. Depending on how it’s installed, the colors or pattern of the stone can be subtle or more bold. Either would work great for this interior design board. I may lean more toward a bolder option because the orange and blues in the tile would compliment the other elements so well.
The last element I added to this interior design board is a white marble sample. It also brings in a modern touch while staying in the organic feel of the board. Plus it helps lighten some of the darker colors we used.
As usual, I couldn’t resist a greenery stem for this board. You could go with several different options, or none at all since the board already has so many beautiful features. It’s totally up to you. But since I wanted to keep this under my own aesthetic I needed a little green in there somewhere.
Possible Designs
So now that we have put together the pieces of our interior design board, and are happy with how it looks. It’s time to decide on some designs for it!
Interior Design Board: Living Room
Because I was so in love with the textile options of this interior design board, I wanted to design a room that would take full advantage of them!
For this room, let’s start with the light wood floor sample for….yep, the flooring. The light color will keep the space cozy and warm, as we layer on some of the darker tones.
We have plenty of paint samples to choose from for this board, but I would like to keep the darker tones for accents. So I would choose the light grey paint sample for the walls.
Next, let’s start incorporating the textiles! I would go with a leather sofa in a modern or minimal design, nothing too bulky. Then I would incorporate the rust diamond textile in a couple of accent chairs! If a leather couch isn’t a good option for you, feel free to make some design adjustments. You could go with a couch in the medium grey from our paint samples, and add in some leather pillows. It’s totally flexible, so make it your own.
For the stone tile in our interior design board, if you have a fireplace in your living room, definitely use it here! Otherwise you can include it in side tables or other accents.
To finish off the space, include a brass floor lamp and some furniture pieces in the dark slate color. I would also include a potted tree in one corner to complete the southwest organic feel of the space.
Interior Design Board: Laundry/Mud Room
These spaces don’t always get the design attention they deserve. They are usually hard working spaces where we spend a considerable amount of time, and deserve to be just as appealing as the rest of the home.
Since these spaces usually see more water or moisture than the rest of the house, I would use our stone tile for the flooring here. It gives the space a really rustic organic feel and is less likely to show wear or be damaged.
Since we didn’t use the wood sample on the floor, let’s incorporate it in some cabinets because laundry rooms typically require storage options.
For our textiles, I would love to use the rust diamond fabric as window treatments. We may not get the chance to use the leather option for this room design, but it’ll show up again in the next one.
Pull in some of our paint samples through accents such as artwork, laundry or storage bins, or even a rug to bring a little comfort to the space.
Interior Design Board: Kitchen
For our final room design, let’s move to the kitchen. Starting with the floor, let’s go with wood again.
Next up is cabinets in one of our grey paint samples, paired with a white marble counter. If you’re going for a bolder look with your cabinets being the focal point, the darker grey would be best. But if you would prefer a more open or lighter look that would accentuate the other design elements such as the tile, I would go with a lighter shade. For my own design, I would lean toward a lighter shade, paired with white marble counters.
Since I mentioned the tile above, let’s talk about that next. I would love to use it as a back splash for this design, installed in a herringbone pattern. It would be an even bolder feature if you plan to use a vent hood in your design.
For textiles, let’s go with leather chairs for the bar or counter. If you have an open concept, you could also incorporate it in the dining room. I love using the rust diamond fabric as window treatments because it’s a bold highly visible element that pulls everything together.
Well hopefully you enjoyed this design board as much as I did! If you have any design questions or would like to chat about how to take this design further, I would love to hear from you! Either leave a comment below or send me a message HERE and let’s talk!
