If you’ve been looking forward to another interior design board, then you’re wait is over! I have so much fun working on these for you guys. And, hopefully, you enjoy them as much as I do.
I stuck with my signature style for this board by contrasting darks and lights. There are many natural elements with a boho feel. But pops of dark and modern elements to balance it.
It all came together so beautifully, and I love the clean minimal feel of it. This inspiration board would be a great canvas to add your own design elements like baskets, plants, unique or personal furniture elements, or maybe colorful art prints.
The Colors:
For this interior design board I wanted an airy organic feel. So I went with a softer palette and a few bold pops! The primary paint colors are a light grey with a hint of tan, a medium grey, and a dark green.
I usually pair two lighter colors with two darker ones for balance. But in this particular inspiration board, several of the textiles are dark. Because I wanted to keep it light and airy, I decided against another dark tone.
Depending on the space you are designing, these colors can be incorporated many different ways. An obvious choice is wall color, but they can also be used for cabinet or furniture color. Another option would be in decorative pieces like picture frames, artwork, or vases.
The Textiles:
I already mentioned that several of the textiles are dark tones, but I didn’t say how much I LOVE them!! For this interior design board I chose a natural white cotton weave (used as the backdrop), a neutral black, a black and white stripe for interest and movement, and a woven off white option (on the left side).
Textiles are a great way to soften a space. They also add movement and texture. You can incorporate them in several ways such as curtains, pillows, bedding, rugs, or furniture upholstery.
Every room has certain textile requirements. If you have a heavily trafficked space, you may opt for darker textiles on the floor. Or if you’re working on a smaller space, lighter textiles won’t overwhelm it as much as darker tones. If you prefer a more moody space, you may lean toward darker tones. It’s all about how you want the room to feel or convey.
For my own personal design aesthetic, I prefer spaces that aren’t too bright. Don’t get me wrong, I love white walls in an open concept. But I usually have to balance it with darker, more earthy tones for it to feel comfortable or grounded for myself. Which is why I included all the darker tones. If you prefer a lighter look, you can easily manipulate all the elements I chose to get that feel.
Finishing Touches:
In the airy spirit of this interior design board, I went with a very light wood flooring. I’m usually drawn to a heavy grain or dark wood tone. But there was something so incredible about this light wood that I became totally obsessed with! I tried several design layouts and I’m pretty sure I landed on the perfect one.
The other element I added was a beautiful white marble tile. It gives this inspiration board a touch of modern, and helps balance all the softer elements. It’s also a great option for letting other parts of the design “have their moment” without being too boring. Marble is a great way to blend different design styles together.
To finish the look, I picked black door pulls to ground the design and give a pop of contrast. If you’re not working in a room that has door pulls, you could incorporate this element by adding black lamps or candle holders in the decor.
Possible Designs:
Maybe you’re loving the feel of this interior design board, but aren’t sure how to apply it to your space? Here are some possible options you could start with and then make your own personal tweaks or adjustments. Get creative and make the space yours!
Interior Design Board: Living Room
While I was putting this inspiration board together, my head kept picturing it as a living room area. There’s just something about the design that makes you want to sit with a cup of coffee and let all the tension fade away!
From this interior design board, I would start with the flooring and choose the beautiful light wood laminate. This would especially be a great option for rooms that don’t get much natural light, to lighten up the space.
The next layer I would add is wall color. Because I want the room to be light with pops of color, I would choose the light grey (with hints of tan) for the walls.
With those “permanent” (I say permanent because floors and wall paint can be the most time consuming or expensive changes to make to a room. So once you decide on them, you may not change it for a while. But nothing has to be 100% permanent) elements decided on, I would start layering in decorative pieces.
I would choose the white cotton textile for curtains. They would have a subtle contrast to the grey walls to add dimension, without drawing too much attention. To finish off the window treatments, I would pair the curtains with black curtain rods. This would incorporate the black handle pull element, and give the design a touch of industrial or modern styles.
Next, I would use the off white heavy weave textile for a rug. Although it would be a shame to cover that beautiful floor! But rugs really help finish a space, and also add a sense of comfort. The weave gives it an organic feel to add a little life to the space as well.
Okay friends, here come the POPS that will really create and define the space. Right in the middle of the beautiful light color scheme, I would use the black textile for a couch! Your space will determine the kind of couch you get. But in my imaginary room, I saw a large sectional. Enough seating to host a crowd or for you to curl up with a good book for a few hours.
Most living spaces require surface area. That’s where the marble from the interior design board comes in. You could go with side tables or a nice coffee table. It doesn’t even have to be real marble. There are many faux marble options that would look great and also save on budget expenses. It would contrast with the dark couch, which would pull out the dark veins of the marble! There are plenty of surface options for living spaces, so choose one that suites your own liking. You could incorporate the black again with a black metal frame. Or maybe add a touch of brass or gold here.
And now we have to add the beautiful dark green color! If you went with a traditional three seat couch rather than a sectional, and you’re room is large enough, you could add green side chairs. Another great option that is super popular and very functional, would be green floor poofs or cushions. They would be a great option for houses with littles, or small apartment spaces that need more compact or mobile furniture.
Finish off this look by adding some pillows with a mixture of the different textiles (I could never leave out the black and white stripe textile!). You could also get some really interesting art prints. To stay in the boho style or maybe even a little tropical, you could hang some banana leaf or bird of paradise leaf prints.
Any of the paint colors in this interior design board could be used for furniture accents or room accessories, depending on you much or how little you want to put in your space.
There you have it! A great living room layout to get you started. You could also apply these design choices to a bedroom as well! Don’t limit your options.
Interior Design Board: Kitchen
This inspiration board is also a great option for a kitchen design. Here’s how I would design a kitchen around it.
As always, I start with the flooring and work my way up. Kitchens are a great place for tile or stone because it’s a good waterproof option. So for this room, I would go with a marble floor. You can get actual marble in almost any style or pattern you want, or there are ceramic and porcelain options available too. Because this interior design board is very neutral, you could go with almost any option. So choose the one that catches your eye, or works in your budget.
If you’re not sure what kind of flooring would be best for the space you’re designing, check out my other post on the different Types of Flooring.
The next largest feature for a kitchen are cabinets. Don’t be afraid to get creative here with your interior design board. In my design I would incorporate the dark green paint color for the lower cabinets and the light wood color from the flooring sample as your upper cabinet color. If your kitchen has an island, another great option would be to use the medium grey color for all the cabinets along the wall and use the light wood for the island cabinets.
Because I’m working off the theme of a lighter space with pops of color, I would stick to the light grey (tan) color on the walls. Grey is also a good choice for pairing with light cabinets that wont compete or overwhelm them.
I wanted to be sure I also incorporated the black textile in this room design. Since there isn’t a couch to POP in this room, I would adjust the design and use one of the black textiles for window treatments.
For final touches add the black door pulls, place some green plants around the room, and throw down a nice woven rug!
Interior Design Board: Bathroom
I’m gonna change things up a little for this bathroom design. If you love an interior design board but the specific elements aren’t working for your space, you can make adjustments that still have the theme or color scheme of the board without following it exactly. For example, if you’re looking for another tile option, you could find one in the color of one of the paint samples.
I would start with the flooring and choose a medium grey tile option. A hexagon pattern would be AMAZING with a grey grout. Grey on grey will eliminate contrast because of all the other contrasting colors that will be incorporated.
Continue with a marble tile in the shower in whatever pattern you prefer. I would choose a large tile (maybe 4″x12″) installed in a chevron style, to give it a modern feel.
For wall color, I would go bold with the dark green paint sample! Here is the pop we have been trying to incorporate in each design. Because of windows, showers, and cabinets; bathrooms tend to have less wall real estate for paint. Which means you can add a darker tone to the walls and the lighter elements (white marble shower, and grey floor) will help balance it.
The darker shade of the walls can also be balanced by the sink vanity. For this design I would put in a vanity in the light wood color of the floor sample. The sink would be another great place to incorporate a marble counter.
To finish off the space, add black door pulls and a black frame mirror above the sink. Choose one of the textiles for curtains; I would go with the white cotton again. And add your personal touches with plants, vases, candles or whatever else you feel would finish the space!
You’re All Set!
