Welcome back to This Growing Home! If you’re considering an interior update or project but aren’t sure where to start, I have the perfect solution! Check out this interior design board for some inspiration to help get you started.
I was SO happy with how this interior design board came together, and I absolutely love every little detail about it. There are hints of vintage, industrial, and bohemian with a little farmhouse thrown in. But keeping it very modern with natural elements, it’s right in my lane. So, I hope you are as inspired by it as I was.
If you’d like a little more explanation than just photo inspiration, keep reading and I’ll fill you in on all the details.
The Colors:
The primary colors I worked with for this interior design board were black, off white, light grey, and dark green. You can see the Sherwin Williams color names and mix numbers if you’d like to color match exactly.
Designs can easily get dark in a hurry, so I usually try to pair darker colors with lighter colors to balance the room. These colors can be used for wall, furniture, art, or decor elements however you’d like. I intentionally chose them because they work well together and compliment each other, so you can put together the perfect room!
From an interior design perspective, if you’re working in a room with little to no natural light, I would use the light colors predominantly and accent with the darker ones. (House plants are my FAVORITE green accents!) But if you happen to have high natural (or otherwise) light, maybe consider a darker accent wall?!
It’s totally up to your preference and how the space is speaking to you. So try a few different concepts and see where your interior design board takes you!
The Textiles:
For this interior design board, I kept the textile shades light, but wanted obvious weave patterns. I am OBSESSED with thick weave textiles! Woven textiles lend themselves well to the bohemian and farmhouse styles because of their natural look and texture.
They are also a great way to “soften” the harder industrial metal or cold stone elements. If you’re not really sure where to use these different textiles consider them for chair upholstery, curtains, pillow cases, or even rugs with the color or patterns shown in these samples.
(To get more specific examples, keep reading for some of my thoughts on how I might put together a room around this interior design board.)
My original inspiration for this whole board was the diamond upholstery textile in the background! I fell in love with the clean lines and monochrome colors that nod to industrial as well as modern styles. And the geometric pattern that gives it a subtle bohemian vibe.
Because the pattern was so strong, I didn’t want to distract from it. So I chose lighter fabrics to coordinate with it. From left to right: I have an off white canvas, an airy grey toned weave, a white cotton, and a heavy cream weave.
Don’t feel like you have to match these textiles exactly. There are plenty of options available in these colors or textures, so don’t limit yourself and get creative!
Finishing Touches:
I love a natural look or feel to a space, so often my designs include a wood element. Wood works with almost any design style depending on what shade you choose. Here I went with a natural or light colored wood to compliment rather than overwhelm the black accents.
Another accent that helps fill a space with life are house plants! I honestly can’t get enough of them. So I knew I had to include some green (one of my signature colors!) in this interior design board. While the textiles definitely have a hint of industrial, the pattern also says bohemian to me, so I leaned into that with a beautiful Monstera leaf.
Because I can’t go plucking leaves from plants on a regular basis, this one is artificial. If you don’t have enough natural light in the space or if you’re like me and have no hint of green on your thumb, artificial is a great option. You can also get creative with it and frame the leaves or use some beautiful art prints.
For a visual, here’s a post I have on a Modern Farmhouse Gallery Wall where I framed some artificial fern leaves.
The other accent I couldn’t resist including was a vintage camera. I picked up this amazing piece at a garage sale and have been trying to find the perfect interior design board to pair it with! The straight lines and hard angles complimented the patterned textile, and it gives the board a hint of industrial with a touch of nostalgia.
Possible Designs:
If you’re loving this interior design board so far, but still aren’t 100% on how to apply it, here are some possible options you could work from.
Interior Design Board: Kitchen
Let’s say I wanted to apply this board to a kitchen design, how would it look? Great question, here’s how I see it in my head.
I would start with the floor, because it is the foundation of every room. The obvious choice would be the wood laminate I have in the picture, and I think it’s definitely the right choice. Who doesn’t love a wood floor?!
The next question I would ask myself is, “where do we go with the cabinets?” In any kitchen design, the cabinets will be the largest statement. From this interior design board, you could go a few different directions. But colored cabinets are super fun and popular, so I’d love to apply one of the paint samples here. I would suggest going with black lower cabinets and white uppers (for a super industrial look, maybe even consider open wood shelves), paired with a beautiful marble counter. If you’re picturing it in your head with me, hopefully you just swooned a little too!
Next up is accessories! I love these black drawer pulls. The hard angles and black metal are very clean and modern, and work well with the industrial style. I personally think the black pulls on black cabinets would give a very sleek and clean look. But if you’re not loving the black on black, another great option would be to go with brass pulls.
Upholstery can be difficult to place in a kitchen for obvious reasons. But that doesn’t mean it should be left out! If you have a bar, the diamond pattern would look amazing on upholstered stools. And you can’t go wrong with white cotton kitchen towels. You could also use any of the lighter fabrics for window treatments, or get a heavy weave rug!
As a final touch, be sure to get some green in there! Kitchens are a great place for live plants. Maybe even start your own herb garden.
Interior Design Board: Living Room
If you’re designing for a living room space, then this interior design board works for you too! Here are some ideas I had for that.
Again, I would start with the floor. And again, I would go with the wood! Like I said, everyone loves a wood floor (and other options could get a bit pricey for a larger space).
Working our way up in layers based off the textiles I chose, I would definitely lay a heavy weave rug next. Then add a light off white colored couch and incorporate the diamond pattern upholstery in either side chairs or stools. You could even use it for pillow cases for a cheaper alternative.
Depending on your space, you can incorporate the other textile options with additional furniture or mix and match pillows! More airy fabrics like the silver option pictured, work well as window treatments and are easily layered for extra interest.
Let’s talk color samples. I would go with either off white or light grey for the walls and incorporate the black with furniture pieces. The dark green color is BEAUTIFUL and could be used a couple different ways. Statement walls are very popular, and a green wall behind an off white couch with some color coordinating artwork would be perfect! (A safer option would be green curtains).
For other accessories I’d stick with the black metal theme and choose a coffee or side table that fits the bill. The marble would be the hardest element to apply to this space. An easy option would be to find marble vases, trays, or candle holders to place throughout the room. And be sure to get that Monstera in there somewhere!
Interior Design Board: Bathroom
This interior design board can also be used for smaller spaces like bathrooms.
Okay, hold on tight, I’m going to choose a flooring other than wood! Because it’s a smaller space and also the concerns of water, bathrooms are a great place to take advantage of tile flooring. Specifically, I would love to incorporate the diamond pattern (from the upholstery) with a geometric black and white tile!
The next choice would be determined by several factors depending on what style shower/tub you prefer. Tub inserts are a super budget friendly option. But if you’re wanting something like a walk in shower, then you’ll have to select the material for that as well. This is your moment MARBLE! Following with the angles and lines theme, I’d choose a medium size rectangle tile laid in a chevron pattern for interest.
Since the wood wasn’t incorporated in the floor, I would want to include it in another way. A wood vanity with a marble counter and black pulls on top of the patterned floor tile would be AMAZING!
Moving on to the paint samples. I would still lean toward light grey or off white for the walls, because of the small space and the potential for dark colors to feel overwhelming. Again, green plants are my go to and lots of them! If you have an exterior window for light, many plants love the humid conditions of a bathroom.
Textiles are pretty straight forward for a bathroom. Here you can mix and match the textile colors for the window treatments, bath towels, shower curtain, or rugs.
There you have it!
Hopefully this interior design board gave you a little inspiration and the possible design layouts will get you headed in the right direction.
My last words of advice are don’t take any of this too literally. Feel free to be creative with your choices so that they reflect who you are and what you want the space to be. Every space is different and may require certain tweaks or adjustments to look right.
