Decorating with Candles from the Thrift Store
If you’re looking for some inspiration on easy diy home decorating ideas, it doesn’t get any easier than decorating with candles! I love using candles in my home decor because they are so easy to incorporate and can be mixed, matched, and changed out as often as I want. Plus they are pretty budget friendly (especially from the thrift store) and add character and warmth to any space.
Home decor can get expensive, especially when you start changing it out for each season, holiday, or just on a whim like me. So today, I’m sharing with you guys how to decorate with candles and some great candle display ideas for your home. If you don’t have any candle holders laying around, head out to your local thrift store and pick up a stash!
Why Thrift Store Candle Holders?
I always keep an eye out for wood or brass candle holders while I’m cruising the isles of my local thrift store. I’m always amazed by how many I find and usually head for home with a basket full that only cost a couple bucks! Here’s the beauty of second hand candle holders, they have unlimited potential. With a little spray paint and maybe even some sand paper, they are perfect for any easy diy home decorating ideas.
While I love a good diy, many of the candle holders I’ve found are perfect, no attention necessary. It completely depends on your own unique home decor vision. If you’re interested in hearing more about how to decorate with candles, keep reading for some inspirational decorating ideas. As well as how I made cheap thrift store candle holders into amazing decorating ideas. I even came up with some fun decorating rules for incorporating candles in your home.
1. Yay for Trays
There is nothing easier in home decor than slapping a tray onto a tabletop and arranging a few knickknacks on it. If you like a more natural look, try using a flat basket in place of a traditional wood tray. In my opinion, anything that lays flat and has handles counts as a tray.

2. Something Taller, Something Smaller
Creating layers is an easy way to appeal to your inner designer. These candle display ideas create a balanced display with tall, medium, and small pieces. The tall or large piece draws your eye in while the candles give it a focal point and the smaller item grounds the whole arrangement. It keeps your eye moving around rather than getting focused on one small area.
3. More, More, More
Even simple pieces can have a huge impact just because of volume. Creating a tablescape or mantle arrangement with several candlesticks make beautiful and simple candle decorating ideas. You can stick to only using candlesticks or add a few floral pieces for a fuller look.
There were no improvements to be made here. These candlesticks went straight from the thrift store shelf onto my table.
4. A Frame and a Flower
I have to admit, this is my go to when it comes to how to decorate with candles. If it is framed around the edges it works; art pieces, chalkboards, an empty frame, a clock, even these Farmhouse Clipboard Frames I can show you how to make.
5. Top It Off
This is another layer look with the candles working as a topper. Adding a base to your candles give them dimension and texture. It also allows you to incorporate colors in your decorating ideas.
I’m a personal fan of the farmhouse look so these brass candlesticks that I spray painted black appear pretty frequently in our home.
Well, What Do You Think?
So there it is, my top tips on how to decorate with candles! Hopefully these candle display ideas will inspire you to head out to your local thrift store and raid the shelves for all their candle holders.

I learned as a child when using candles for decorating, you light the wick for a short time and then blow it out. In those days, the unlit wick was not etiquette. What do you know about this?
Thank you!
