DIY Winter Wreath Ideas

Can you believe that in one week, it will be time to take down all the Christmas decorations and start planning for the new year?! December used to last so much longer when we were younger! If you’re thinking about all that Christmas cleanup and wondering what you will put in its place, I have the perfect easy diy wreath for you!

These diy winter wreath ideas are perfect for transitioning your home from Christmas to winter without leaving your shelves bare until spring.

But if I’m being honest, I love this easy diy wreath so much it will probably be hanging long past spring time! It has a great farmhouse look that will work for any season.

What You’ll Need

Okay so let’s just jump right in because I’m too excited to put it off any longer! You’ll want to head out to your local craft store and pick up a few things:

Wreath:

For this you can use any wreath form. I put together two diy winter wreath ideas for you. A grapevine wreath and a traditional evergreen wreath. I think they both turned out great.

To save even more on this project, check in at your local thrift store for some cheap holiday wreaths. I found mine for a few bucks, and after removing the old garland, lights, and flowers it was perfect for this easy diy wreath project!

Greenery:

For my easy diy wreath, I wanted to keep it budget friendly and simple to put together. So, I only used three kinds of greenery.

Eucalyptus is one of my favorite types of greenery to use, and there are a million to choose from. I was able to find some from Hobby Lobby that had a beautiful mauve accent color. If you pick it up when they have greenery half price, it makes this easy diy wreath even more affordable!

I also picked up some lamb’s ear garland for half price at Hobby Lobby! If you’re doing any winter themed decor, lamb’s ear is great because it has a beautiful frosted look. Here’s a pro tip for your diy winter wreath ideas. If you plan on using lamb’s ear, you’ll get way more from cutting up the garland in the wedding supply isle, than for the same price in stems.

Just to make sure the scale leaned more toward winter, I threw in some needle evergreen stems as well! I was able to find a stem at Hobby Lobby that could be deconstructed and stretched into six pieces.

Hot Glue Gun and Glue Sticks:

No craft or diy supply list is complete without a hot glue gun! I use mine for nearly every diy project, and they’re also great for all the toy repair jobs (#boymom).

Put It All Together

For these diy winter wreath ideas, I was going for a specific look. I wanted my wreaths to look “jam packed” with greenery. Not the minimal ascetic I’m usually drawn toward. So I was incredibly picky about how I arranged the pieces.

Start with the eucalyptus. The one I used came in a bush with seven stems. I separated them from each other and shaped them into wide v’s. That way, they weren’t all bunched in the center of wreath and hung over the inside and outside edges.

Once I was happy with the eucalyptus, I added the lamb’s ear. If you didn’t read my tip earlier about the garland, it’s way cheaper than buying the stems. I cut a bunch of pieces for these diy winter wreath ideas and even had quite a bit left over! If you pick up garland and are wanting to recreate my easy diy wreath exactly, cut your garland into two leaf cluster sections.

Next, I added the needle evergreen stems wherever I felt there was to much of a gap or bare spot. It was a little tricky separating the wired stems (Hobby Lobby has quality stuff!), but they really helped finish the look of these easy diy wreaths!

While you’re adding the layers to your diy winter wreath ideas, try not to make it too pattern-y. While symmetry is great, these easy diy wreaths look better with a more natural, chaotic look.

My other suggestion while you’re putting your wreaths together is, try not to add your greenery only to the middle of your easy diy wreaths. Make sure you have stems that hang off the outside and inside edges. It adds dimension and texture to your diy winter wreath ideas for a fuller “jam packed” look.

Putting together your easy diy wreaths should be a two step process. The first step is positioning and the second step is attaching. Once they’re glued down, there’s no going back. Sticking your stems in your wreath before gluing them down will help you see what it looks like before you make it permanent.

While gluing down my evergreen easy diy wreath, I attached the stems to an evergreen branch rather than the wreath frame. I wanted to make sure that I would be able to shape and change the positioning if I needed to. This is totally up to you and what you think would work best for your diy winter wreath ideas.

And What Have You Got?!

After the glue has dried, you’re all set to start hanging your diy winter wreath ideas. Just try to restrain yourself from ending Christmas early and packing up the holiday decor to make room for these beautiful easy diy wreaths!

Here are how mine turned out!
