DIY Winter Decor Ideas
Budget Friendly Easy DIY Christmas Decorations
It’s time to pull out the holly and garland and start decking the halls! I’m a firm believer that no holiday cheer should be dissuaded by price tags. These diy winter decor ideas are the perfect way to prepare for the holiday season!
You can stock up on a few items from the thrift store that will save you a ton in holiday decor. Here are my top five thrift store purchases and easy diy projects to make your home merry and bright!
Milk Glass
I’m always keeping an eye out for unique milk glass pieces at my local thrift store. I’ve collected quite a stash and couldn’t be happier after seeing how great they turned out for this easy diy Christmas decorations post!
I had originally planned to use them with miniature fir trees, which would have looked great. But then, I found these evergreen branches for a steal at Hobby Lobby and knew they would be PERFECT for my diy winter decor ideas! The contrast between the pure white and forest green is stunning! As an added bonus, this was also one of my hubby’s favorite easy diy Christmas decorations!
I kept it super simple and only added a dark stained wood door for a backdrop (mostly just to cover the outlet in the middle of the wall). The grapevine wreaths added extra dimensions, but were totally unnecessary. It just depends on how simple or how elaborate you prefer your diy winter decor ideas.
With the vases only costing about $1 each and the branches at $1.50 each, this look only cost me $12.50 to make. Plus a couple extra bucks for the door and wreaths. These easy diy Christmas decorations would also look great staggered through a bookshelf, or distributed around a living room to create cohesion in your diy winter decor ideas!
Repurposed Frame Wreath
Out of all these easy diy Christmas decorations, this one probably requires the most time. But it’s worth every minute! You can change the style or design of these diy winter decor frame wreaths to fit your home. I made a couple different options for you guys to see.
I was able to find all the supplies to make these at my local thrift store, and put them together with a hot glue gun. For a full tutorial, check out my area’s Goodwill blog for my upcoming guest post: Repurposed Picture Frame Wreath.
While my easy diy Christmas decorations wreaths have a more traditional or rustic look. you could easily use a black frame with more modern flowers or greenery. There are a million possibilities for these easy diy winter decor ideas!
If you didn’t already know, I absolutely LOVE layering when it comes to home decor. Whoever said wreaths have to hang on walls anyway?! If you don’t want to fill your wall with hooks or holes, you can follow my tutorial for a DIY Stocking Hanger and create this look for your own home!
Glass Vases
You can’t go wrong with evergreens when it comes to easy diy Christmas decorations. I was able to find all of these beautiful glass vases at my local thrift store for an average of .50 cents each! I mean really mamas, where else can you find awesome pieces for less than a dollar?!
While you’re at the thrift store for vases, you can peruse the Christmas decor isles for evergreen branches. Otherwise, you can pick some up at most craft supply stores. If you’re feeling super thrifty, you can follow my lead and trim a few branches from the yard!
Ok, so I don’t have any evergreens in my yard. But, as luck would have it, someone lost a tree trimming off the back of their truck a few days before this post and my amazing hubby turned the van around to pick it up for me. I also recycled a few branches from the real tree we picked for Christmas! (you can see some fun pictures of our trip to the tree farm on the Facebook page!)
Finished off with some frosted bulbs from Dollar Tree, and this is one of the simplest diy winter decor ideas on the list! Line them up on a mantle or shelf and everyone will be admiring your easy diy Christmas decorations.
Painted Trees
These painted trees are perfect for diy winter decor ideas! Thrift store shelves are full of these little glass trees in a bunch of shapes and sizes! Add a little paint and you’re all set! You can find a full diy tutorial in my DIY Winter Decor Glass Trees post.
In my full post, I show you a bunch of different color options and how to style or decorate with them. My favorites were these frosted white trees! I absolutely loved the clean look of them and the way they stood out from the greenery I layered behind them.
With a can of paint and about .75 cents or less per tree, this diy winter decor look cost almost nothing! And it only takes a few minutes to create. These easy diy Christmas decorations are perfect for decorating any surface in your home!
Brass Candlesticks
I saved this one for last because it’s my ABSOLUTE favorite of the diy winter decor ideas!! And I’d just like to take this opportunity to say that I liked antique brass before Johanna Gaines said it was cool. But I’m so glad she agreed with me.
I wanted to keep this one super minimal with a modern farmhouse feel. So I picked up some plain green wreaths from Hobby Lobby in a couple sizes and hung them across my mantle. They make the perfect backdrop for these brass candlesticks.
Even though I don’t encourage open flame candles in a house full of littles, they are so great to decorate with! I would highly encourage you to start building up your brass candlestick stash for these easy diy Christmas decorations.
