If you’re searching for easy diy Christmas decorations, you’re in the right place! Christmas is such an amazing time of year, when people are actively choosing to see the good in others and the beauty that surrounds them. In our family we go all out when it comes to decorating for the Christmas or winter season.
If, you’re from a part of the world (like me) where winter means a lot of time spent indoors, then you know the importance of changing up the scenery of your home every now and then. But if you don’t have a large home decor budget (also like me) then you have to get creative! These diy winter decor glass trees are a great place to start!
I love easy diy Christmas decorations to make my home feel like a winter wonderland!
As a busy mama, I don’t always have time to change decor as often as I’d like. So, in recent years my Christmas decorations have taken a more winter direction rather than just a Christmas focus. That way, I’m not faced with scrambling to take them down right after the holiday or having Santa hang out until Spring! So this year, I attempted to find easy diy Christmas decorations that could stay on the shelves until the snow melts. Thus, the DIY Winter Decor Glass Trees were born!

There’s Plenty To Go Around
Let me just start out by saying that if you’re looking for inexpensive holiday decor, always start at your local thrift store. During my trips this past summer, I discovered a ton of these amazing glass trees. I’ve been told they were originally candy jars that were discarded after being emptied. However, I immediately saw their potential as easy diy Christmas decorations and started collecting them. I was able to find them in many different sizes including a short chubby one that is definitely one of my favorites! On top of looking amazing, this is one of the easiest diy winter decor projects I’ve ever done!
How Easy Is It?
The hardest part of this diy winter decor project was deciding what colors I wanted to paint the trees! I stopped at the hardware store and spent way too long trying to decide on which spray paint colors I wanted. I’m terrible at decisions and brought home way more than I needed, but these easy Christmas decorations were so worth it! And, I’m so excited by how well they turned out.
The paint colors I picked for my diy winter decor glass trees were:
- Metallic Aluminum
- Metallic Gold
- Metallic Copper
- Metallic Dark Copper
- Matte White
Once you’ve decided on your colors, you can start spraying your trees! I would recommend going very slowly. If you put too heavy of a coat on, it will drip down the glass. And if you try spraying the next coat too early, it will re-wet the previous coat and (you guessed it) more dripping. If you do get excited a go a little to fast, you can scrub the paint off of the glass trees. However, after having to do it a few times myself, I can tell you it’s not fun and I would encourage you to avoid it at all costs!
My Method
I was able to get away with only two coats on each tree. While you’re painting your diy winter decor glass trees, you’ll want to make sure you are pointing your spray paint directly at the glass trees and not angled down at all. Otherwise, the paint wont reach the underside of the glass tiers. I sprayed mine once when I woke up, and then again right before I went to bed.
For my trees, even though there were still some thin areas of paint, I decided against a third coat because I planned on putting candles under mine and wanted the light visible through the paint. For the white trees, I only ended up doing a single coat because I wanted more of a frosted effect rather than a solid coat.
Once the paint is dried, all that’s left is to put them around your home. Like I said, these easy diy Christmas decorations are as simple as they come! And incredibly affordable. All in all, I paid roughly .50 cents per tree and a couple bucks for each can of spray paint. You could save even more if you have left over paint laying around.
